Position Description: The Special Events & Marketing Intern will work directly with the Special Events & Marketing Coordinator in the City Manager’s Office to understand public policy, risk analysis, special event coordination, departmental collaboration, public communication and City marketing.

While this internship is unpaid, students will benefit from practical, in-field experience in a government setting, working directly with senior staff and department leaders. Interns will apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects, assist in strategic initiatives, and build a network of professional references. This opportunity is ideal for fulfilling academic internship hour requirements, capstone projects, or related field experience for resume building.

Duties and Responsibilities/Program Highlights

  • Craft Incident Action Plan for the City’s annual Holiday Parade adhering to the National Incident Management System (NIMS)
  • Evaluate requests for new special events, applying risk analysis, crowd management and public impact criteria
  • Coordinate and communicate with City departments for efficient event support, including Public Works, Venice Police, Venice Fire, Public Information, etc.
  • Serve as a liaison between City staff and permitted event holders to intake permit applications, requirements, and reminders
  • Produce social media videos and still photography with subject matter experts, City projects, department staff and events
  • Create social media graphics, flyers and other digital public-facing communications using Canva
  • Craft media release, social media, and website copy adhering to AP style
  • Add events to the City’s digital events calendar through the Granicus system
  • Complete independent study FEMA courses related to special events and emergency management, and additional other training sessions
  • Understand public policy, political implications and escalating public concerns through the chain of command


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Valid State Driver’s License Required
  2. Currently enrolled college student (undergraduate/graduate/technical or vocational). Preferred majors/concentrations include Emergency/Crisis Management, Communications, Marketing, Business Administration, or Event Management. This internship is not intended for Hospitality Management students.
  3. Knowledge to successfully fulfill the duties and responsibilities listed above as this position will require a strong work ethic, desire to learn, collaboration and creativity.
